Flemish: translations

Who speaks Flemish?

More than 6,500 people use Flemish worldwide. For most of them, it is their mother tongue. Flemish belongs to the group of South Germanic languages, forming part of the large family of Indo-European languages. It is mainly used by people living in Belgium, the Netherlands and France. It is considered to be the Belgian version of the standardized Dutch language and is therefore called Flemish Dutch or Belgian Dutch. In the Brussels-Capital Region it has the status of an official language.

History of Flemish

It is difficult to speak of a completely separate history of the Flemish language. It is still a form of Dutch, which has been the official language in Flanders since 1973. The differences between Flemish and Dutch are largely based on different pronunciation principles and minor differences in syntax. In 1980, the Netherlands and Belgium signed the Dutch Language Union Treaty, which resulted in changes to Flemish fifteen years later. The term “Flemish” has been used since the 14th century to refer to the language and dialects of the people who lived in Flanders and the Duchy of Brabant.
