Who speaks Hebrew?

More than 7 million people use Hebrew worldwide.
For most of them, it is their native language. Hebrew belongs to the group of Semitic languages that make up the Afro-Asiatic language family. Hebrew is commonly used in Israel. It is also used by numerous Jewish diasporas around the world, especially in the United States and France.

History of Hebrew

The history of Hebrew is at least 3 thousand years old.
Researchers and linguists suggest dividing the history of the Hebrew language according to the stages of its development into: biblical Hebrew, Mishnaic Hebrew, medieval Hebrew, modern or Israeli Hebrew. When the Israelites went to Canaan in the middle of the second millennium BC, they probably used one of the varieties of the Semitic language. Over time, this language mixed with various local languages, especially Canaanite. The oldest known text in Hebrew is the Calendar of Gezer, written in Phoenician script (also called Paleo-Hebrew). In the later period, Hebrew developed several times, mainly in the late second and first millennia BC. Then, during the period of the Babylonian captivity and around the 9th century AD, the AD, the Masoretes improved the Hebrew notation system, adding vowel and accent marks to biblical manuscripts.

The process of defining the modern Hebrew language, which since 1948 has been the official language of the State of Israel, began in the 18th century CE.
