Latin: translations
Who speaks Latin?
Latin belongs to the group of Baltic languages, forming part of the Indo-European language family.
It is a so-called passive language – it does not meet all the requirements to be considered dead, but its use remains marginal. The only country in the world using Latin is the Vatican. It plays a very important role in the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church, in medicine, biology and law. Apart from these areas, it is virtually absent in the modern world.
The history of the Latin language
Latin was originally spoken in Latium, an ancient area in Italy. It was the language of the ancient Romans and the official language of the Roman Empire. The first records of Latin date from around the 6th century BC. In the 5th century the Law of the Twelve Tables, i.e. the first codification of Roman law, was written in Latin. From the 11th century AD the role of Latin began to decline. In the 18th century its role was marginalized. It remains in this state until today.
Use of Latin in business
Latin is a passive language; it plays no role in international business or trade. However, quoting the thoughts of famous philosophers in this language is considered an indicator of good manners.
