Macedonian language: translations
Who speaks Macedonian?
The Macedonian language belongs to the group of South Slavic languages, forming part of the Indo-European language family. This language is spoken by almost 2 million people.
The only country in which Macedonian has official language status is Northern Macedonia. Outside Macedonia, we can only find people who speak it in immigrant minorities in Germany, the USA, Canada and Australia. Some communities in northern Greece also use Macedonian dialects.
History of the Macedonian language
Until the 17th century, the Macedonian lands belonged to Bulgaria, which is why the two languages are very close to each other, also from a historical point of view. Since 1878, a modern Macedonian language began to take shape, based on dialects that do not resemble the Bulgarian language. At the beginning of the 20th century Macedonian literature began to develop. In 1944, the Macedonian literature began to develop. In 1944, the Anti-Fascist Council for the National Liberation of Yugoslavia declared Macedonian a separate language. The establishment of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia triggered the development of this language.
Use of Macedonian in business
As the Macedonian language is only used in Macedonia, which is not a popular business destination, knowledge of the language will not be particularly useful when conducting business activities internationally.
