Who speaks Norwegian?

Like Swedish, Norwegian belongs to the group of North Germanic languages forming part of the Indo-European language family. Approximately 5 million people communicate in this language. Norwegian is a language with strongly differentiated dialects, indicating where man comes from. Two forms of the language are accepted: Bokmal (used by 3.5 million people) and Nynorsk (used by approximately 700,000 people). In Norwegian we can only communicate in Norway and in regions in Sweden or Denmark.

History of the Norwegian language

The first records of Norwegian originate from the 12th century. Between the 16th and 18th centuries the Norwegian elite used Danish, but over time Norwegian writers tried to change this trend. In the middle of the 18th century, Riksmål (now Bokmål) appeared, meaning “written language”. Based on Western dialects, Landsmål (now Nynorsk) was created. In the 11th century Landsmål became an official language along with Danish. Since 1885 both Norwegian varieties have had the same official status.

Using Norwegian in business

Norwegian is only useful in commercial contacts with Norway. In the international arena, Norwegian does not play a significant role.
