Spanish: translations
Who speaks Spanish?
Spanish belongs to the Romance language group, part of the Indo-European language family. It is one of the most popular languages in the world. About 650 million people speak Spanish. It is estimated that 1.5 billion people know it.
We can easily communicate in Spanish in many countries in Europe, Africa and America. It is the official language in Spain, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, Venezuela, Paraguay and many other countries. Interestingly, it is accepted as an official language by many organisations: the UN, the EU, UNESCO, the WTO, the WHO, FIFA, UEFA and many others. We can distinguish several variations of this language: Castilian, Basque, Catalan and Galician.
History of the Spanish language
After the collapse of the Roman Empire, Latin began to lose its role on the world stage. This led to the formation of many dialects and languages, including Castilian, which originated in the Iberian Peninsula around the 5th century AD. It was founded in Castilian, in the Middle Ages. The literary language was also based on Castilian in 1253. Alfonso X of Castile gave it precedence over other varieties.
The 12th-century epic Poema del mio Cid is considered the oldest Spanish text. In the 15th century the complete grammar of the Spanish language was created.
Using Spanish in business
Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world.
It guarantees excellent communication in Spain and most of South America. The use of Spanish is useful not only in business activities carried out in Spanish-speaking countries, but also in lobbying activities due to its importance in the EU and the UN.
