Swedish: translations
Who speaks Swedish?
Swedish belongs to the group of North Germanic languages. Swedish is not a separate language. It is divided into very clear dialects. The main official Swedish language is based on the Stockholm dialect. A number of borrowings occur in this language, mainly from German, French and English. Approximately 10 million people in the world use Swedish, virtually only in Sweden, Finland, Norway and Estonia.
History of the Swedish language
We first encounter traces of the North Germanic language, from which Swedish derives, in the 3rd century AD. In the first half of the tenth century, the Germanic languages used in the north appeared. When Christianity spread to these territories, the Germanic languages began to be written with the Latin alphabet. By the 13th century, the Swedish language had developed. It is interesting to note that in the 18th century. Swedish was divided into a ceremonial language used in Stockholm and a language used “by the people”. The present official language was created on the basis of the Stockholm language.
Use of Swedish in business
Swedish is only useful in commercial contacts with Scandinavian countries. Although it is one of the official languages of the EU, Swedish does not play a significant role in the international arena.
