Who speaks Estonian?

Estonian belongs to the Balto-Finnish group of the Finno-Ugric language family. Just over one million people speak this language in the world. We can communicate with it only in Estonia.<\/p>

History of the Estonian language<\/p>

For a relatively long time Estonia remained under the influence of other countries, including Denmark and Germany. Consequently, the Estonian language was born under difficult circumstances. The first texts written in this language come from the 16th century. In 1525, the first book in Estonian was written. In the 17th century the modern literary language was created. Estonian became an official language only at the time when Estonia gained its independence. Writing in this language spread in the 19th century.<\/p>
