Who speaks Catalan?
More than 11 million people use Catalan worldwide.
For most of them, it is their native language. Catalan belongs to the group of Western Romance languages, forming part of the Indo-European language family. Some Catalan also belongs to the group of Gallo-Romance languages. Catalan is one of the five most spoken languages in Spain. The majority of users of this language can be found in Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Outside Spain, Catalan is the official language of Andorra. Some people who speak Catalan live in Murcia and Sardinia.
History of the Catalan language
The history of the Catalan language dates back to the 9th century AD. The Catalan language, like Italian and French, derives directly from Latin. This language developed on both sides of the eastern end of the Pyrenees. By the 8th century, Catalan rulers were expanding their territory south and west at the expense of the Muslims, bringing their language with them. In the 11th and 12th centuries the Catalan rulers went north of the Ebro River, and in the 13th century they conquered the lands of Valencia and the Balearic Islands. In the 14th century, the town of Alghero in Sardinia was crowded with Catalan speakers. The language also reached Murcia. During the Middle Ages, Catalan passed through its golden age, reaching a peak of maturity and cultural richness. With the unification of Castile and Aragon, the use of Spanish gradually became more prestigious and marked the beginning of the decline of the Catalan language. The role of the Catalan language gradually declined. The defeat of the pro-Habsburg coalition in the War of the Spanish Succession (in 1714) launched a series of actions that necessitated the use of Spanish in legal documentation in Spain.
Using the Catalan language in business
The Catalan language is very useful for business activities in the Spanish market. Catalan is used by approximately 19% of the country’s inhabitants. This is therefore worth taking into account when planning activities in this market. The region where Catalan is widely used is known as Barcelona, one of the two most important cultural and business centres of Spain. Therefore, by stepping into this market, it is extremely important to ensure professional translations of all corporate materials into Catalan; when it comes to importing goods or raw materials into the Spanish market, it is worth carrying out a professional translation from Catalan into English. This will definitely help to succeed in the demanding international market.
