Who speaks Icelandic?
Icelandic is used by almost 350 thousand people in the world. Most of them live in the only country where we can communicate in this language – Iceland.
History of the Icelandic language.
In 872, approximately 900 groups of Norwegian settlers arrived in Iceland. The stages of development of the Icelandic language are the period of Old Icelandic (until 1550) and Modern Icelandic (after 1550). The first settlers brought the Norwegian language (Old Norse), from which Icelandic and Norwegian developed. Due to isolation, Icelandic has barely changed since the beginning of the history of human presence on the island. After the adoption of Christianity in 1000, as a result of a decision taken by the Althing (i.e. the national parliament of Iceland), the Latin alphabet was introduced on the island.
However, the Icelandic alphabet contains a few extra letters. The present Icelandic differs from its original form mainly in pronunciation, while its spelling remains practically unchanged. It is worth mentioning that Icelanders are very resistant to words of foreign origin.
All loanwords, for example from English, are replaced by Icelandic equivalents, which is controlled by the Icelandic Language Committee.
Using Icelandic in business
Although Icelandic does not play a significant role on the international stage, this does not mean that Iceland is not interesting from the point of view of Bulgarian entrepreneurs.
