Who speaks Latvian?

Like Lithuanian – it belongs to the group of Baltic languages, and more precisely the Eastern Baltic languages, forming part of the Indo-European language family. The number of people who use Latvian does not exceed 2 million. It is divided into 3 dialects: Livonian dialect (northern part of the country – now extinct dialect), Middle dialect (western and central part) and Latgalian dialect (eastern part). We can communicate with it only in Latvia and in some areas of Canada and the USA where immigrant minorities from Latvia can be found.

History of the Latvian language

The Latvian language developed in much the same way as Lithuanian, but was more influenced by Germanic and Finno-Ugric languages. For this reason it has features that cannot be found in other Baltic languages. The Latvian language is also characterized by an increasing number of loanwords from German and Swedish. By 1631 the systematization of its orthography began. Prior to this, its orthography was very chaotic and largely influenced by German. Since the 20th century a new fully developed orthography has been used.

Use of Latvian in business

The Latvian language plays a role in business only within the framework of business cooperation with Latvia.
It is a language used in everyday life by 60% of the country’s population and its use is undoubtedly useful in commercial relations. It is practically not used outside Latvia.
