Who speaks Uzbek?
More than 30 million people use Uzbek worldwide. For most of them, it is their native language. It belongs to the Turkic language family. Outside Uzbekistan, where it is the official language, Uzbek is mainly used in Afghanistan. In addition, a significant number of Uzbek speakers can be found in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Turkmenistan and China. Uzbek minorities live in Australia, Israel, Germany, Turkey, the USA and Ukraine.
History of the Uzbek language
The Uzbek language was spread throughout the ancient Central Asian states of Bactria, Sogdiana and Khorezm.
Turkic-speaking tribes settled in the valleys of the Amudarya, Sardarya and Zeravshan rivers around the 7th-8th centuries, displacing or assimilating the older Iranian-speaking population. Between the 9th and 12th centuries, these areas were ruled by the Karakhanid dynasty, whose elite was Turkic-speaking. During the reign of Chagatai Khan, Timur and his successors (the Timurids) there was a flowering of literature, which was created based on local Turkic vernaculars. A high point in the development of this literary tradition was the work of the poet Alisher Navoi (15th-16th centuries). The modern Uzbek language is a distant descendant of the Chagatai language, which has adopted a large number of Persian and Arabic borrowings. From 1940-1992, when Uzbekistan was a Soviet republic and operated as the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic, the Uzbek language was written in Cyrillic script. Since 1992 it has been officially written in Latin, but it is still possible to encounter entries in Cyrillic or Arabic script.
