Who speaks Persian?

More than 60 million people use Persian worldwide.
For most of them, it is their native language. There are seven varieties of Persian, which are often classified as separate languages: Aamic, Bakhtiari, Geelani, Guarani, Hazraghi, Luri and Mazandrani.
Tajik, the official language of Tajikistan, is also considered a variety of Persian, meaning another 8 million users. People living mainly in Iran, Afghanistan and Iraq communicate in Persian. Persian is considered the second language of Islam (first language – Arabic). Thus, in the Arab world, it has the status of a universal language – i.e., the language commonly used and understood by most people.

History of the Persian language

Persian belongs to the Iranian group of Indo-European languages. The history of this language begins about 500 years before our era. The oldest known text written in Old Persian is the Behistun inscription, dating from the time of Darius I, the Great. The transition from Old Persian to Persian probably began before the 4th century BC. However, the Persian language was confirmed 600 years later when it appeared in inscriptions from the Sasanian era. Hence, before these times no form of this language could have been reliably described. Furthermore, the literary language of Persian was documented much later, in the 6th or 7th century. Beginning in the 8th century, Persian was gradually replaced by Modern Persian, and the Middle Period form persists only in Zoroastrian texts. The modern version has been used since the 19th century. Then in the Arab world, the Arabic vocabulary was still functioning, but many words were integrated with Persian phonetics and grammar. Furthermore, under the Qajar dynasty Russian, French and English terms were introduced into the Persian language.

Using the Persian language in business

Although Persian does not play a significant role on the international stage, knowledge of the language can be very useful for doing business in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan and Russia, and is absolutely essential in Iran and Iraq. Therefore, operating in this market, it is extremely important to take care of professional translations of all corporate materials into Persian, while in the case of importing goods or raw materials from the Persian market, it is worthwhile to carry out a professional translation from Persian into English. It will definitely contribute to success in the demanding international market.
