Italian: translations
Who speaks Italian?
Italian is spoken by around 60 to 100 million people worldwide. It belongs to the Indo-European language family, and in particular to the Romance language group.
Italian is a language with many dialects. We can distinguish approximately 20 dialects based on geographical regions.
We can easily communicate in Italian in Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, Switzerland and Istria, where it is an official language. Knowledge of the language will ensure easy communication in Albania, Ethiopia, Libya and Malta. It is also used in many other countries around the world where there are large Italian expatriate communities.
History of the Italian language
The development of Romance languages began after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, when the role of Latin gradually declined, giving way to the development of regional languages. Some argue that they evolved from vernacular languages existing alongside Latin. Italian is considered the language most closely related to Latin. The current form of the Italian language largely stems from the influence of medieval writers – Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarch and Giovanni Boccaccio, thanks to whom Tuscan became a literary language. During the Renaissance, the complete Italian grammar was created. It is difficult to distinguish the stages of the development of the Italian language, as they proceed very smoothly.
Using Italian in business
The Italian language does not play as important a role in the international arena as English, but knowledge of it is very useful and influences good business relations with people using this language.
Any company planning to start business in Italy or Switzerland should try to recruit at least one employee who is fluent in Italian.
