Who speaks Hungarian?
Hungarian belongs to the group of Finno-Ugric languages forming part of the Uralic-Altaic language family. It is estimated that about 15 million people speak Hungarian in the world.
Hungarian has the status of an official language in Hungary, some regions of Slovenia and Vojvodina. Outside these regions, its users will be found in Slovakia, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine and Austria.
History of the Hungarian language
In ancient times, Hungarians lived in the areas around the Kama, a Russian river, where they interacted with the Proto-Bulgarians. Later, around the 7th century AD, they moved to the Sea of Azov, where they came into contact with the Khazars. This led to the influence of the Turkish language on the Hungarian. After 895, the Hungarians conquered the Carpathian Basin and adopted many of the Slavs. When Hungary became Christian, many loanwords from Latin entered the Hungarian language. And in the 16th century, when the Habsburgs ascended to the throne of Hungary, many German loanwords permeated the Hungarian language. In the 19th century, Hungarian underwent a reform aimed at purifying it and introducing words originating from Finno-Ugric languages.
Use of Hungarian in business
Hungarian is used practically in Hungary; in other countries it is used only locally. Therefore, knowledge of it will be useful only for those companies that have business relations with this country. In the international arena, Hungarian does not play a significant role.
