Danish: translations

Who speaks Danish?

Danish belongs to the group of East Scandinavian languages, descended from the ancient Norse language.
In total, about 6 million people speak this language. Danish is the official language in Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Many people speak Danish in the northern region of Germany, Schleswig-Holstein. Interestingly, it is also taught as one of the main foreign languages in Iceland, in addition to English and Norwegian, due to the fact that Iceland was in a personal union with Denmark until 1944.

History of the Danish language

The first Danish texts written in Latin originate from the 13th century. Standard Danish was developed in the 17th century based on the Zealand dialect. Currently Danish is a rather uniform language. Dialects are neither popular nor evolving. Interestingly, the southern dialect of Swedish is included in the Danish dialects. This stems from the fact that until 1658 these areas were inhabited by a Danish population.

Use of Danish in business

As Danish is mainly used by the Danish population, knowledge of the language will be very useful for business development in Denmark. The use of Danish will certainly also make it easier to achieve success in this market more quickly. In the international arena, the Danish language does not play a significant role.
