Who speaks Lithuanian?

Lithuanian belongs to the group of Baltic languages forming part of the Indo-European language family. In total, about 5 million people speak this language.

It plays the role of an official language only in Lithuania. In addition, we can communicate with it in Western Belarus, Latvia, Russia and the Polish region of Suvaski. It is also used by Lithuanian emigrant communities in Canada, the USA and Australia.

History of the Lithuanian language

The first texts written in this language date back to the 16th century.
They were largely religious texts – the Catechism of M. Maeviddas is considered to be the first Lithuanian book. Shortly after 1620 the Polish-Latin-Lithuanian dictionary was published, which means that Lithuanian was already a mature language in those times. Later its form was influenced by vernacular dialects (mainly Belarusian) and Polish. By 1919, the modern version of the Lithuanian language was formed, based on the Aukštaitė dialect.

Use of Lithuanian in business

The Lithuanian language plays a role only within the framework of business cooperation with Lithuania. It is a language used in everyday life by 80% of the country’s population and its use is undoubtedly useful in commercial relations. It is practically not used outside Lithuania.
