Slovak language: translations

Who speaks Slovak?

The Slovak language belongs to the group of West Slavic languages forming part of the Indo-European language family. It is spoken by almost 7 million people.
Slovak is an official language in only two places – Slovakia and Serbian Vojvodina. These are the only places where we can communicate in this language. The Slovak language is not unified, we distinguish three dialects: East Slovak, Central Slovak and West Slovak, which differ significantly.

History of the Slovak language

The history of the Slovak language can be divided into two periods. The first period is the pre-literary period, which lasted until 1000 AD. The first half of the literary period is the period between the first and the last millennium. In the period of Christianisation, this was the place where Cyril and Methodius carried out their activities. There they used the Old Bulgarian language, which, as a result of many processes, became the origin of many modern Slavic literary languages, first Bulgarian, then Russian and others. The second period began in the seventeenth century, when the first works codified the Slovak language – Grammatica Slavica (1790), a textbook on grammar, and Etymologia Vocum Slavicarum (Etymology of Slavic Words) (1791).
