Who speaks Hindi?
Depending on the method of calculation, Hindi is spoken by between 180 million and 422 million people worldwide. This higher number is the result of accounting for people who use the Rajasthani, Bihari and Pahari languages, which are often classified as dialects of Hindi. Hindi belongs to the Indo-European language family and more specifically to the Indo-Aryan languages. Hindi is basically the official language of India. However, its users can also be found in Nepal, Fiji, Mauritius and Suriname. In addition, a large group of people who speak this language live in Western Europe and the United States.
History of Hindi.
Like the other Indo-Aryan languages, Hindi is a direct descendant of an early form of Vedic Sanskrit that appeared in the 7th century AD. Before the standardization of Hindi, various dialects and languages gained prominence as a result of their use in literature (Awadhi and Braj Bhasha). Early Hindi literature was produced in the 12th and 13th centuries CE. Works of this period include the epics of Rajasthan. The Hindi used in the present day is based on the Khari boli dialect, the national language of Delhi and its neighboring areas, which replaced earlier dialects such as Awadhi, Maithili and Braj Bhasha. Modern Hindi and its literary tradition evolved in the late 18th century and in a similar form holds true today.
