Ukrainian language: translations
Who speaks Ukrainian?
Ukrainian belongs to the group of East Slavic languages.
It is used by almost 50 million people. The Ukrainian language is not uniform – we can distinguish three groups of dialects: Northern, Southeastern and Southwestern, consisting of approximately 16 types of dialects in total.
History of the Ukrainian language
We meet the first traces of the Ukrainian language in the 12th century, in Southern Ruthenia (western territories). By the 14th century Ukrainian phonetics was formed. Ivan Kotlyarevsky had a huge influence on the form of the literary language. Publishing the Aeneid in 1798, he introduced the vernacular language into literature. In the 19th century, there were attempts to stop the expansion of the Polish language into Ukraine by introducing Old Slavic or Russian as a common language – just pronounced differently. In 1861 the Russians were guaranteed freedom of both spoken and written language.
Use of the Ukrainian language in business
Ukrainian does not play a significant role in the international arena and its use is generally limited to Ukraine itself. However, an increasing number of companies – especially employment agencies – are expanding their operations, seeking Ukrainians willing to do temporary, usually manual, work in Poland.
