Who speaks Finnish?

Finnish belongs to the group of Finno-Ugric languages, forming part of the Uralic language family. It is estimated that about 6 million people speak Finnish in the world. We can easily communicate with it in Finland, where Finnish is the official language along with Swedish, but also in Sweden, where approximately 300,000 people are of Finnish origin. We can also meet people who know this language in some regions of Norway and Estonia. Finnish is one of the official languages of the European Union.

History of the Finnish language

Interestingly, the first text in Finnish history comes from the 13th century from the territory that was then Ruthenia.
The Finnish language probably developed around 1000 B.C.
Its form was largely influenced by the Baltic and Germanic languages. When Sweden annexed Finland, the Finnish language took shape mainly in colloquial form. Only Swedish was the official language. The first sentence written in Finnish dates from 1450 and is attributed to a Finnish bishop who was supposed to have written, “I want to speak Finnish, but I am unable to do so.” When Sweden broke its ties with the Catholic Church and introduced Lutheranism in 1524, the Bible was translated into a language that ordinary people could understand.
It opened the way to the development of the Finnish language in written form. In 1543, the first book in Finnish was written. After 1809, Finnish began to be integrated into the national culture. Many necessary words have been introduced, for example in administration. By the 1920s Finnish was already a fully developed language.
