Who speaks Montenegrin?

More than 150,000 people use Montenegrin around the world. For most of them, it is their native language. Montenegrin belongs to the Western group of South Slavic languages, part of a large family of Indo-European languages. Together with Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian, it is often treated as a Serbo-Croatian language. However, some linguists are of the opinion that Montenegrin should be treated as a completely separate language. In general, Montenegrin is used only by citizens of Montenegro. In 2007 Montenegrin became the official language of Montenegro.

History of the Montenegrin language

Montenegrin is one of the four standard variants of the Serbo-Croatian polycentric language. It is based on the Škocava dialect. Even the Declaration of the Montenegrin PEN Centre, which is dedicated to the promotion of the language, contains a statement that “Montenegrin does not systematically mean a separate language, but only one of the four names (Montenegrin, Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian) by which Montenegrins refer to their part of the Shokocavi dialect, usually inherited from Muslims, Serbs and Croats. In 2017, many Montenegrin writers, scholars, journalists, activists and other public figures from Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia signed a Declaration on Common Language, which states that in Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, a polycentric language consisting of several variants (similar to German, English and Spanish) is the standard language. In 2009, a new Montenegrin Latin script was announced as the standard.
